How play and laughter unlocked my creativity.

When I first arrived at the Wake Up and Wondershift Retreat in Portugal, I expected a journey of personal development and self-discovery. What I didn't anticipate was all the play and laughter (so much laughter) and how vital that would be in unlocking my creativity and inspiring new ways of thinking. The retreat is the brainchild of Judy Goldberg, who placed an emphasis on incorporating fun, joy, and light heartedness into the experience, making it transformative and proving that play isn't just for children - it's an essential component of adult life, too. We just forget to do it.
From the outset, without anything being said about play, we were being silly. It was as if the group knew that's what we needed. This group of people who had never met before were bonding over silly jokes, boardgames, handstands in the pool and playful digs at each other. It was as if we were being silently encouraged to embrace play as a powerful tool for creativity. Judy had also designed the schedule to have activities that spark joy and laughter woven into it, reminding us that creativity often flourishes in an environment free of pressure and full of fun. There were group games and icebreakers that had us laughing and connecting with one another. These activities were not only enjoyable but also helped to break down barriers and create a sense of camaraderie. When you're laughing and having fun, it's easier to let go of inhibitions and open up to new ideas. They brought us together, and after just 5 days together it was as if we had known each other a lifetime.
We all know the saying "laughter is the best medicine", and during the retreat, I discovered just how true this can be. Incorporating humour and laughter into our daily activities had profound effects on both my mental and emotional wellbeing. I never felt better during those 5 days away (the amazing chef who cooked us a vegetarian feast probably had something to do with that too!). Although attending a retreat with a group of people I didn't know was (and still is, let's be honest!) completely out of my comfort zone, the amazing women I met with their wicked sense of humour had me feeling at ease almost instantly. We got each other. The space Judy held was safe to be ourselves, free of any judgement and we let those inner children out to play.
The light-hearted and humourous approach not only made learning and self-discovery (which, let's face it, can be uncomfortable at times) more enjoyable but also fostered a relaxed atmosphere where creativity could thrive. When you're laughing, your mind is open and receptive, making it easier to think creatively and explore new ideas. The combination of play and laughter at the retreat helped me break free from conventional patterns of thought.
Many of the playful activities were collaborative, allowing us to bounce ideas off one another and build on each other's creativity. This collective brainstorming was incredibly powerful, leading to innovative concepts and fresh perspectives. The laughter and joy shared during these activities fostered a sense of trust and openness, essential ingredients for creative collaboration and ones I intend to bring forth into any collaborative project I take part in in the future.
Getting on the plane to go to Portugal, I felt stressed. Stressed at the unknown experience I was about to experience but also the stress of work, projects I felt behind on, my growing to do list, it was all there - a ball of stress. Well that stress dissolved in Portugal and, which the peaceful setting with it's rooftop pool surely had something to do with that, I put most of it down to the laughter. Play and laughter significantly reduce stress levels, creating a mental space where creativity could flourish. When you're relaxed and happy, your brain is more capable of making connections and generating new ideas. The retreat's focus on joy and fun provided a much-needed break from the stresses of daily life, allowing my creativity to flow freely.
As I reflect on my time at the Wake Up and Wondershift Retreat, I'm struck by how profoundly play and laughter impacted my creativity and thinking. These elements reminded me of the importance of joy in the creative process and taught me to approach challenges with a playful mindset. Now I'm back home, I continue to incorporate play and laughter into my daily routine. Whether it's through playful activities, sharing a joke with friends, or simply taking time to enjoy the lighter side of life, I've found that these practices keep my creativity vibrant and my thinking flexible.
One thing I didn't realise about myself was how much I can make others laugh. I always knew I loved to make people laugh, but perhaps didn't see how easily I can do it when I am relaxed, comfortable in my surroundings and at ease with the people around me. I was surprised to hear again and again how funny I was - and from a group of people who don't know me!
Judy's incredible Wake Up and Wondershift Retreat in Portugal was a powerful reminder that creativity thrives in an environment of joy and playfulness. By embracing play and laughter, I unlocked new ways of thinking and discovered a wellspring of creativity within myself. If you're looking to ignite your creative spark, I highly recommend integrating more play and laughter into your life—you might be surprised at the creative breakthroughs that follow.
